The Soul of Non-Conformism
Viatcheslav Kalinin — The living fossil of Moscow Non-Conformism. Searching for lost souls in the surreal alleys of Old Moscow.
Explore CollectionsKalinin's canvas knows no void. He yearns to fill everything, to narrate everything. It depicts the hidden corners of post-war Moscow, a bohemian carnival, the faces within the tavern.
His style is known as "Carnivalism". Though drawn from the gritty reality of the underclass, it bears no pessimism, but rather teems with absurd vitality and grotesque humor. Every painting is a condensed autobiography.
